High-Ranking U.S. Treasury Official & State Executive Officers Recognize Financial Literacy Month in Rhode Island

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Education, Dan Iannicola, Jr. of the U.S. Department of the Treasury to attend several activities in Rhode Island

April 13th, 2005  – The Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition has organized a series of activities on Wednesday, to call attention to April as Financial Literacy Month in Rhode Island.

The Coalition is proud to welcome Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Education, Dan Iannicola, Jr. of the U.S. Department of the Treasury as a guest of the State of Rhode Island.

Governor Carcieri and the Rhode Island Senate have proclaimed April as financial literacy month in Rhode Island.The United State Senate and House of Representative have also proclaimed April as Financial Literacy Month.

Schedule of Activities:

10:27 a.m.  Iannicola visit to Mt. Pleasant High School
Lieutenant Governor, Charles J. Fogarty to attend and introduce Iannicola, who will teach a lesson in personal finance to sixty high school students – grades 9 to 12.  Mount Pleasant High School (Principal, Maureen Crisafulli)  434 Mount Pleasant Avenue Room 207D, Providence

Noon  RI Financial Literacy Leaders’ Luncheon
Iannicola to provide keynote address to 100 guests.  General Treasurer, Paul J. Tavares to welcome Iannicola and other guests. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Arthur N. Votolato among confirmed guests.  Hope High School Improvisational Drama Troupe to provide entertainment.  Hope Club, Six Benevolent Street, Providence, Rhode Island

2:30 p.m.  Financial Literacy Education Program Exposition
Financial education program providers to provide information to legislators and public through information booths at the State Capital.  Programs represented include;

State executive officers, legislative leaders and special guest Dan Iannicola will provide comments on the current challenges and opportunities involving personal financial literacy in Rhode Island and across America.

Dan Iannicola, Jr. was appointed as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Education, effective September 29, 2003. In this position, Mr. Iannicola is responsible for overseeing the Treasury’s Office of Financial Education, which was established in 2002 to promote access to financial education programs so that Americans obtain the practical knowledge and skills that will enable them to make informed financial choices throughout their lives. Mr. Iannicola advises the Assistant Secretary of Financial Institutions on matters pertaining to financial education, including the development, analysis and execution of policy.For more, visit:www.treas.gov


The Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition (founded in 2004) is an coalition of dozens of Ocean State and New England region businesses, community organizations, educational institutions, government agencies and officers. The coalition¹s mission is “to increase the financial literacy of individuals in Rhode Island.”  The coalition¹s website is www.rijumpstart.org

In 2006, for the first time, Rhode Island high school seniors participated in the national Jump$tart Coalition personal financial literacy survey that measures teenagers¹ knowledge of personal financial literacy topics.
