United States high school seniors' financial literacy scores have gone from bad to worse as announced by the Jump$tart Coalition at a press conference held yesterday in the Federal Reserve Board of Governors meeting room.
3/7/08	Tie-Breaker Determines RI "March Smartness" Title
In a dramatic overtime victory, with General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio serving as Question Master, the "Senior Cougars" team from North Providence High School won the 2008 Sovereign Bank Rhode Island LifeSmarts Consumer Competition, claimed the Consumer Cup, and earned the right to represent Rhode Island at the national LifeSmarts competition to be held in Minneapolis, MN from April 12 to April 15, 2008.
2/29/08	"Money Math" Resourse Re-Released for Educators
In an effort to provide free financial education tools to middle school teachers, the United States Treasury, Jump$tart Coalition, and other collaborators have launched the new "Money Math: Lessons for Life" curriculum that can be accessed at www.mymoney.gov in the Kids section.

Bobbie McCrackin, Vice President and Public Affairs Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta will deliver the keynote address at the Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition's "Financial $marts for Students" educator conference to be held at the Memorial Union Ballroom on the Kingston campus of the University of Rhode Island.

"Financial Football," a youth oriented video game developed by Visa in partnership with the NFL and NFL Players, Inc. to be promoted throughout New England at an event featuring six New England Treasurers and high school teams representing each state.

A team of students from North Providence High School representing Rhode Island won the "Reserve Cup" in Boston yesterday at the second, six-state, quiz-show competition organized and hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston (FRBB).

10/10/07	US Treasury Assistant Secretary to Promote Smart Credit in Ocean State
The Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition has coordinated a Rhode Island visit from David Nason, Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions, United States Treasury on October 18th, 2007 which is American Bankers Association Education Foundation national Get Smart about Credit Day. The Washington Trust Company is a partner in the Rhode Island youth financial education activities.
6/25/07	RI Jump$tart Coalition Applauds Legislators for Establishing
Providence, RI - The Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition applauds the Rhode Island legislature for passing bills to establish a 15-member study commission to report back to the legislature early next year on the status of youth financial education in the Ocean State middle and high schools. Senator Daniel J. Issa and Representative Raymond C. Church sponsored senate bill 804 and house bill 6235 respectively.
6/13/07	NCEE Report Card on RI - U.S. Financial Education
New York, NY - On Wednesday, June 13th, the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) reported to the nation via live online press conference that Rhode Island is among states not currently requiring that financial literacy courses be taught in schools.
5/11/07	RI Teen Peer Leaders to Market Smart Money Campaigns
Sixteen teenagers (mostly Juniors) are participating in a new statewide program that trains promising Rhode Island students in "real world" money skills. The Rhode Island Financial High Program, or "RI-FI High," was launched this spring to educate high school students across the state about the importance of personal financial skills.

3/30/07	RI Native Nominated by President Bush to High US Treasury Post
On March 1, 2007, The White House Office of the Press Secretary posted that President George W. Bush intends to nominate David G. Nason to the post of Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (Financial Institutions). Nason, a native of North Providence, RI attended Mt. St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket. His parents and other family still live in North Providence.

The Eagle Einsteins of Barrington High School have claimed the 2007 Rhode Island LifeSmarts Championship after placing third in 2005, and second in 2006. The team of seniors from Barrington High School is now preparing to represent Rhode Island at the national LifeSmarts competition to take place in Orlando, Florida on April 21-24, 2007. April 25, 2006 (Bristol, RI) – Kimberly A. Reed, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department, John W. Snow, will teach a lesson to second graders at Guiteras Elementary School in Bristol from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. as a part of the U.S. Treasury’s national effort to promote the American Bankers Association Education Foundation’s national “Teach Children to Save Day.”

PROVIDENCE – April 10, 2006 - A nationwide survey conducted for the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy reveals that high school students in Rhode Island answered less than half of the answers correctly on the personal finance survey.

Providence, RI - Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Education, Dan Iannicola, Jr. of the U.S. Department of the Treasury will visit Rhode Island on Thursday, October 20th, 2005 and will teach responsible credit usage lessons in college and high school classrooms with the assistance of General Treasurer, Paul J. Tavares and Rhode Island Bankers’ Association President, Bob Twomey.

4/1/05	Governor Carcieri Proclaims April Financial Literacy Month!
On Friday, April 1st, 2005 the Governor of the State of Rhode Island, Donald L. Carcieri, issued a Gubernatorial Proclamation, proclaiming April 2005 as Financial Literacy Month in the State of Rhode Island and called on all citizens to join in recognizing the importance of this month. The Governor also issued the following statement "In the 21st century, financial literacy is more important than ever. Everyone needs to know how to read and write, and everyone needs to know how to manage their money. In this era of automatic teller machines, online banking and plentiful credit, we must be careful to provide our young people with the financial skills necessary to excel. That's why I have proclaimed April 2005 as Financial Literacy Month in Rhode Island. I want to thank the Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition for their efforts to help our state's youth learn how to become financially responsible and independent."
3/30/05	RI Senate Proclaims April 2005 as Financial Literacy Month!
The Rhode Island Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 994, proclaiming April 2005 as Financial Literacy Month. The resolution's Prime Sponsor, Senator Frank T. Caprio said of this resolution's passage, "I want to thank and commend my Senate colleagues for joining with me in recognizing the importance of personal financial education. The unanimous passage of this resolution is a testament to our belief that this issue calls upon all of us to work together for a brighter financial future for all Rhode Islanders, regardless of political party affiliation, race, gender, geographic location, or socio-economic background."
